In Iran, a court has sentenced local boxer Mohammad Javad Wafaei-Sani to death in connection with the fact that the man participated in rallies against the increase in fuel prices in 2019. This is stated in the message of the human rights organization Iran Human Rights.
The organization clarified that the athlete was sentenced to death “for a serious crime” and links to alleged arson and damage to government buildings.
According to lawyer Babak Paknia, the 26-year-old boxer was sentenced to death by hanging, but the sentence can still be appealed to the country’s Supreme Court.
The man was arrested in February 2020. Initially, he was charged only with participation in protests. A bail of 30 million tolmans (about 1 million euros) was set for his release.
Social media users are also calling for the boxer’s life to be saved.
Vafaei-Sani is called the champion of Iran among juniors and the champion of the city of Mashhad. He is currently in custody there.
