The main reason for the increase in prices for liquefied gas in Kazakhstan was the “imperfection of the pricing mechanism” on the electronic trading platform. Serik Zhumangarin, Chairman of the Agency for the Protection and Development of Competition, said this, according to the Kazakh edition of Orda.
It is noted that the agency, together with the Prosecutor General’s Office of Kazakhstan, checked six large companies and 180 market entities involved in the sale of liquefied petroleum gas in bulk. In particular, the audit was carried out in relation to Kazmunaigas JSC, Petrosun LLP, SNPS-Aktobemunaigas JSC, JV Kazgermunai LLP, Kazakhoil Aktobe LLP and KazGPZ LLP. They were suspected of abusing their dominant position in terms of setting monopoly high prices.
Protests in Kazakhstan began after the New Year because of the increase in prices for liquefied gas. They were accompanied by riots and clashes with the police. A state of emergency was introduced on the territory of the country, the government was dismissed. President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev turned to his CSTO partners for help. Collective peacekeeping forces were sent to the republic, which are now returning from Kazakhstan. Former Deputy Minister of Energy Zhumabai Karagaev and several other people were detained, allegedly involved in the unjustified increase in prices for liquefied gas.
