The number of criminal cases initiated in Kazakhstan after the riots has increased to 695, according to TASS, said Azamat Sargazin, Senior Assistant to the Prosecutor General of Kazakhstan.
“695 pre-trial investigations have been launched on grave and especially grave crimes, including 44 on acts of terrorism, 15 on murders, 6 cases on facts of propaganda and calls for the seizure of power. 780 people were detained as suspects, of which 695 were arrested by the court,” he said.
Sargazin clarified that as far as administrative cases are concerned, Kazakh courts have considered 8,354 administrative cases related to the riots. 3,337 people were warned without being punished in the form of arrests and fines. In 1,653 cases, the court imposed a fine. 1,002 people were arrested.
Protests in Kazakhstan began after the New Year because of the increase in prices for liquefied gas. They were accompanied by riots and clashes with the police. A state of emergency was introduced on the territory of the country, the government was dismissed. President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev turned to his CSTO partners for help. Collective peacekeeping forces were sent to the republic, which are now returning from Kazakhstan. Former Deputy Minister of Energy Zhumabai Karagaev and several other people were detained, allegedly involved in the unjustified increase in prices for liquefied gas.
