The main goal of France and Germany is to restart the Normandy format – a group of leaders of Russia, Ukraine, France and Germany to resolve the situation in eastern Ukraine. This was announced by German Foreign Minister Annalena Berbock, adding that her French counterpart Jean-Yves Le Driano expressed a similar wish.

A similar intention was expressed by the head of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry Dmitry Kuleba, who thanked the new government of Germany “for a very active position and attempts to actually return Russia to the negotiating table.” His words are quoted by the Interfax-Ukraine news agency.

At the same time, Ms. Burbock recalled that the Russian export gas pipeline Nord Stream 2 still does not fully comply with EU requirements and threatened Russia with harsh measures in the event of a hypothetical attempt to invade Ukraine, which has been discussed for the third month.

After her visit to Kiev, the head of the German Foreign Ministry intends to discuss negotiations in the Normandy format with her Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov.
