Epiphany bathing should not turn into a drunken bacchanalia, because in this case they become a sin. The deputy manager of the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC), Bishop Savva (Tutunov) of Zelenograd, wrote about this in his Telegram channel.
He noted that immersion in the font with prayer can be considered as a pious religious practice. However, if bathing turns into “an orgy with abundant drinking of alcohol, a vanity fair and various other indecencies, then this is a perversion of the picture of memories of the Gospel events.” In this case, bathing would be a sin, the bishop explained.
He also clarified that bathing is just a custom, so those who are contraindicated for health reasons should not dive into an ice font.
Earlier, the head of the Synodal Department for External Church Relations, Metropolitan Hilarion, recommended not participating in Epiphany bathing this year due to the situation with the coronavirus, since lAny mass gatherings of people are now undesirable. He also encouraged the flock to be vaccinated.
Earlier it was reported that in Magnitogorsk, Chelyabinsk region and Michurinsk, Tambov region, believers will not be allowed to go to baptismal baths without a vaccination certificate or a QR code. However, masks will still be required.
On January 19, the Orthodox world celebrates the feast of the Epiphany or Epiphany.
