Russians often use the US dollar to protect savings from unforeseen “crash”, including such as depreciation of the national currency or inflation. However, in order to buy an “American” and not miscalculate, you should pay attention to several factors, Sergey Makarov, Deputy Director of the Capital Markets Department at Accent Capital, told PRIME.
In his opinion, “the main task of the dollar in the wallet of a Russian is to protect savings from an unforeseen collapse.” “But it is important to choose the moment when to buy it. I am a supporter of the fact that you need to buy currency regularly, putting aside 5% of your savings into it. At the same time, we should not forget about ruble savings, since we, Russians, make our main expenses in rubles. This trend has intensified with the advent of the pandemic, when travel abroad is limited. From 5% in rubles + from 5% in dollars is really a very effective airbag,” the expert is convinced.
At the same time, he believes, it is categorically not worth buying a large amount of dollars at the time of the rush growth of this currency: in such a situation, they will not protect against anything. It is very likely that they will have to be sold at a rate significantly lower than the purchase price, Makarov warned.
“For some reason, our compatriots prefer to buy foreign currency at the very moment when the ruble is dramatically depreciating. This is the wrong tactic. If the issue is not very urgent, it is better to wait with the purchase of foreign currency until the rate stabilizes, ”advises the specialist.
He noted that the regular purchase of dollars makes it possible to diversify their own risks associated with geopolitics, sanctions, the rhetoric of Central Banks, and new strains of viruses. “It’s hard to predict everything. And the rule to form the currency part of assets on a monthly basis works very well here,” the expert explained.
In addition, he recommends closely monitoring the rhetoric of the Central Bank of the Russian Federation and the US Federal Reserve System (FRS). “If the Central Bank tightens monetary policy and increases the key rate, it is obvious that at this moment the ruble will strengthen. It is also worth closely monitoring transactions and the rhetoric of the Ministry of Finance,” Makarov said.
On the contrary, he said, if the Fed tightens monetary policy, the dollar will strengthen, and the currencies of developing countries, including the Russian ruble, will weaken.
Also, do not discount geopolitical news: any instability in the world leads to a rise in the price of the dollar, because it is the dollar that investors begin to buy as a stabilizing asset. This also leads to the weakening of national currencies, summed up the specialist.
