Former Polish Foreign Minister and current Member of the European Parliament Radosław Sikorski is convinced that Russia “yearns” for the times when the North Atlantic Alliance had not yet “moved east.” He expressed this opinion on his Twitter account.
Speaking about Russia’s nostalgia for the years “before NATO expansion”, the politician actually offered to return to Ukraine “nuclear warheads” that were “taken away” from the latter in exchange for security guarantees under the Budapest Memorandum.
Russian officials long for the 1990s, before NATO enlarged. So, will Russia give Ukraine back the nuclear warheads she exchanged for guarantees of security and borders from Russia and USA under Budapest Memorandum of 1994?
Plus let’s have free press and elections in Russia again.– Radek Sikorski MEP (@radeksikorski) January 16, 2022
As Gordon recalls, the Budapest Memorandum was signed by Great Britain, Russia and the United States on December 5, 1994. The parties pledged to be guarantors of the independence, sovereignty and borders of Ukraine, as well as to refrain from using any weapons against Ukraine, not only nuclear ones. In exchange, Ukraine renounced its nuclear status.
Meanwhile, according to RIA Novosti, deputy of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, presidential representative in the Constitutional Court Fyodor Venislavsky believes that the country is moving closer to NATO, and there have not been such close contacts with the alliance for a very long time.
