The CSTO peacekeeping contingent will be withdrawn from the territory of Kazakhstan by January 19. This was stated by CSTO Secretary General Stanislav Zas.
According to him, according to Interfax, over the coming week, all units and personnel will be withdrawn to permanent deployment points. These are the plans of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, if the weather does not intervene, Zas noted. He added that the task of withdrawing peacekeepers was set by the heads of state in a joint decision of the Collective Security Council to complete this operation.
At the same time, Zas pointed out, “some” expressed doubts that the CSTO troops would be withdrawn from Kazakhstan, but, he stressed, the organization has fully justified its purpose, and the military is leaving. Please consider that the situation in Kazakhstan is improving. “A turning point has come, the country is returning to normal life,” he concluded.
Recall that after the protests that broke out in Kazakhstan on January 2, which escalated into clashes with the security forces, the government of Kazakhstan was dismissed, the President of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev, headed the country’s Security Council and introduced a state of emergency in the republic until January 19. He also turned to the CSTO with a request to send peacekeeping forces to the republic. According to Tokayev, 2,030 CSTO peacekeepers and 250 pieces of equipment arrived in the country.
