The largest eruption of the underwater volcano Hunga-Tonga-Hunga-Haapai in the Pacific Ocean has caused a tsunami that has already hit the Polynesian island nation of Tonga and is moving towards New Zealand.

The eruption was accompanied by shock waves that spread across the South Pacific. The eight-minute eruption was so powerful that sounds like thunder could be heard even in Fiji – more than 800 kilometers from the volcano.

According to the BBC, eyewitnesses report ash rain in the capital Nuku’alofa, 65 kilometers from the volcano. Also waves swept the coast of Tongo.

King Aho-Eitu Tupou VI of Tonga was evacuated from the palace.

Tsunami warnings were issued by the authorities of several countries in the South Pacific region, including Tonga, Fiji, Australia and New Zealand.

This is the latest in a series of eruptions from the Khunga-Tonga-Khunga-Khapaai volcano. Columns of gas, smoke and ash, escaping from the mouth of the volcano, reached a height of 20 kilometers. According to experts, this is one of the most powerful eruptions in Tonga over the past 30 years.
