A tsunami caused by the eruption of the underwater volcano Hunga-Tonga-Hunga-Haapai in the Pacific Ocean hit the coast of Japan. This came just minutes after the warning was issued, according to the Japan Times.

A tsunami warning has been issued for the islands of Amami and Tokara. It was expected that the waves could reach a height of 3 meters. It is possible that the consequences will reach areas along the coast from Tohoku to Okinawa.

Recall that a large eruption was accompanied by shock waves that spread across the South Pacific Ocean and hit the Polynesian island nation of Tonga. In addition to Japan, tsunamis can threaten Fiji, New Zealand and Australia. The eight-minute eruption was so powerful that sounds like thunder could be heard even in Fiji – more than 800 kilometers from the volcano.

Eyewitnesses reported raining ash in Tonga’s capital Nuku’alofa, 65 kilometers from the volcano. King Aho-Eitu Tupou VI of Tonga was evacuated from the palace.
