The Loja zoo loses another specimen

Tawa, a 10-year-old lioness who remained in the zoo of the municipality of Loja, died on the afternoon of this October 19.

This specimen was taken from the Cuenca zoo and it would have presented a deterioration of health in September, for which the veterinary doctor and staff of the zoo itself valued and cared for it.

“In wildlife animals such as lions, containment (manipulation of the animal) is difficult, but what the animal stopped eating, (what) we did is put all the medication orally,” said Katy Pucha, doctor. veterinary at the animal center.

When carrying out the analyzes, a mass was found in the abdomen, for which they rushed the surgical intervention. “Three parts of about 10 centimeters each were found, this mass was hemorrhagic, even in some parts it was irregular (…) the process was to send for histopathological study,” said the professional.

Mortality risks were high and surgical care was performed in coordination with personnel from the National University of Loja.

“Before the operation there was a risk of death, during the surgery there was also a risk of death and later in the postoperative period, but the medical procedure requires that the surgery had to be given. We declare this spice dead at 1:00 p.m. (Tuesday). We complied with the entire procedure, we acted on time, there was no negligence, there were all the requirements on time, ”said Pucha.

Tawa becomes the third feline species to die at this zoo. In February of this year the lioness Shanga died and Sabú passed away in September 2019.

In July and August of this year, this center also lost two giraffes that were part of its appeal. (I)
