Blockade at the southern entrance to Tulcán ends, after agreement between transporters and government representative

Patricio Rodríguez, leader of the Heavy Transport Association, reported that the authority learned about the union’s proposals.

The entrances to Tulcán were enabled for vehicular traffic on Tuesday afternoon once representatives of the cargo carriers and Mario Pardo, Undersecretary of Transportation and Railways of Ecuador, held a meeting at the ECU911 headquarters.

The blockade of more than 28 hours was suspended after reaching an agreement and the signing of an act of commitment. This led to the withdrawal by the drivers of several operators of more than twenty tractors and tankers that remained parked in the middle of the entrances to the E-35, in the south of the border city.

Immediately, more than 500 vehicles struggled to leave or enter the border city. They were dammed for the effects of the de facto measure. Likewise, after 3:00 p.m. the land terminal began to dispatch bus frequencies to different destinations.

Patricio Rodríguez, leader of the Heavy Transportation Association, reported that the national authority learned of the proposal to freeze fuel prices.

Pardo announced that they will repower and modernize the scales for the control of weights and measures that move cargo vehicles, and will review with their counterparts from Colombia the passage of crew through the Rumichaca international bridge to Colombian territory.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, the drivers of the Ecuadorian license plate trucks must deliver the units to Colombian crew members to cross the border, registering more than ten accidents on the way to Ipiales, which end up affecting the owners of the units.

Rodríguez announced that during the meeting they spoke about a progressive opening of the binational viaduct (Rumichaca), based on a schedule that would allow mobility between Tulcán and Ipiales initially through a system of peak and ID and presentation of the card with the two anti-COVID-19 vaccines.

This system would allow only Carchenses citizens, with ID 04, to enter the neighboring country through a pilot plan that could last four months and would prevent an exodus of Ecuadorian buyers across the border to Pasto and Ipiales.

Meanwhile, the United Front of Workers, the Peasant Coordinator and the Civic Committee of Carchi meet this afternoon and night in Bolívar to define the strategies they will apply in the strike announced for next week by these sectors. (I)
