In the Musical Drawing Room of the Library with an exhibition hall (Chernyshevsky Square, 6), the artist Elizaveta Vasenina-Prokhorova presents the author’s transcript of the engraving “Melancholia” by Albrecht Dürer and her graphic works dedicated to Dante.

“Melancholy” is a copper engraving created by Dürer in 1514, distinguished by the complexity of iconography and many symbols and allegories. Previously, iconologists Fritz Saxl and Erwin Panofsky, historian Karl Gielov, art critic Paola Volkova, writers Ernesto Frers, Dan Brown and Henri Levenbrück sought to interpret it.

Elizaveta Vasenina-Prokhorova has been working in book graphics since 1991, her work was influenced by the works of Aubrey Beardsley – drawing with pen and black ink on a white background with black silhouette fills. Thanks to her architectural education, the works of Vasenina-Prokhorova are distinguished by a clear proportionality of compositions, strictness in lines, geometrization in forms and laconic artistic language.

In 1998, the artist joined the Ten Quiet group of St. Petersburg graphic artists, organized by Irina Chernova-Dyatkina. Since 1999 he has been a member of the Union of Artists of Russia. Her works are kept in museum collections and private collections in Russia, Italy, France and the USA.

In 2013, Vasenina-Prokhorova published a monograph on the “Master Engravings” by Albrecht Dürer “Here or Nowhere”, in 2017 – a monograph on the art of the Renaissance “Piero della Francesca. From Mystery to Origins.

The exhibition “The Mystery of the Engraving” Melancholy “Dürer” can be visited until February 17, admission is free.
