Kazakh opposition leader and businessman Mukhtar Ablyazov achieved an end to persecution in France due to the expiration of the statute of limitations. According to RFi, this is reported by France-Presse, citing judicial sources and the lawyer of the businessman Karim Beiluni.

The oligarch was charged with embezzlement on an especially large scale from BTA Bank. Lawyer Yelena Federova, who represents the interests of Kazakhstan’s BTA Bank, said the decision would be appealed to the Cassation Court.

In October 2020, Mukhtar Ablyazov was charged with embezzlement of more than 6 billion euros in Kazakhstan. According to the government of Kazakhstan, the businessman stole funds from BTA Bank, which he led before its nationalization in 2009. In Kazakhstan, he was found guilty in absentia and sentenced to 20 years in prison.

Ablyazov has repeatedly called his persecution politically motivated.

After the start of the rallies in Kazakhstan, Ablyazov described himself as the “leader of the protests.”
