Russia has deployed its troops and equipment on the territory of Georgia, Moldova, Crimea and Ukraine without the consent of local governments. This statement was made by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg at a press conference.
“These (Russian – ed.) Forces are there without the consent of the governments of these countries, no one invited them there,” Stoltenberg said.
He added that representatives of NATO countries at a meeting today called on Russia to withdraw its troops and respect the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Georgia, Ukraine and Moldova.
Stoltenberg also commented on allegations of NATO’s alleged aggressive eastward expansion. According to him, the former Soviet republics and members of the Warsaw Pact Organization (OVD) in Eastern Europe made their own decisions regarding membership in the bloc.
NATO Secretary General added that “any use of force against Ukraine will lead to serious consequences.”
“Russia will make a serious strategic mistake (by following the path of confrontation – ed.),” Stoltenberg added.
Earlier, we recall, he stressed that the NATO allies are unanimous that Russia cannot veto Ukraine’s entry into the alliance. NATO Secretary General pointed out that each state has the right to choose its own path.
