Russia demanded legal guarantees from NATO that would exclude further expansion of the alliance, according to a statement on the website of the Russian Foreign Ministry.
According to the ministry, at a meeting in the format of the Russia-NATO Council held in Brussels, the Russian side “gave detailed assessments of the intolerable situation in the field of European security.” According to Russian diplomats, this situation was caused by “NATO’s confrontational actions towards the Russian Federation” and “NATO’s growing activity near the Russian borders.”
In this regard, as stated in the message of the Foreign Ministry, the Russian delegation “demanded from the alliance to provide firm legal guarantees excluding further expansion of NATO and the deployment of strike weapons systems in countries adjacent to Russia.”
Let us remind you that earlier, US Undersecretary of State Wendy Sherman stated at the end of the meeting that a number of Russian proposals on security guarantees were unacceptable for the United States. She stressed that the United States would not agree to a ban on NATO expansion.
The day before, a meeting of the Russia-NATO Council was held at the headquarters of the alliance in Brussels, which lasted about four hours. This is the first meeting of the council in 2.5 years. Later, the US Senate announced a draft of new sanctions against the Russian Federation.
