Latvian special services detained two people on suspicion of spying for Russia

The State Security Service (SGB), together with the Latvian Military Intelligence and Security Service, detained two people who are suspected of long-term cooperation with the Russian military intelligence and providing it with classified information, DELFI reports.

It is known that these two were detained back in 2021 as part of criminal proceedings that were launched last year under the “espionage” article. The information received by the State Security Service suggests that the aforementioned persons met with representatives of the Russian military intelligence on the territory of the Russian Federation. The suspects are currently under arrest.

At the same time, TASS recalls that on December 9, 2021, the Latvian Seim agreed to start criminal prosecution at the request of the Prosecutor General’s Office against the deputy of the legislative body Janis Adamsons, who was detained in June by the State Security Service on suspicion of espionage for the Russian Federation. Parliament on June 10 stripped Adamsons of his immunity.

A Russian citizen is also involved in the Adamsons case: he is charged with illegal collection of undisclosed information in order to transfer it to another state. A separate criminal case has been initiated against two more persons of the State Security Service of Latvia.
