The World Health Organization (WHO) excludes the likelihood of a new hybrid strain “deltacron”. This was announced on Twitter by the head of the WHO technical group Maria van Kerkhove.
According to her, the combination of coronavirus strains has not yet been fixed, and the “find” of Cypriot scientists could have been caused by contamination of a sample or equipment during research, which may have led to a laboratory error, Lenta.ru reports.
Jumping in late here: Let’s not use words like deltacron, flurona or flurone. Please ????
These words imply combination of viruses/variants & this is not happening. “Deltacron” is likely contamination during sequencing, #SARSCoV2 continues to evolve & see flu co-infection????below. https://t.co/rNuoLwgCzN

We will remind, on January 9 it became known that the doctors of Cyprus discovered a new strain of COVID-19 – a hybrid of strains “delta” and characterized by increased mobility “omicron”. A new variety of coronavirus, which has the same basis as that of the delta strain, as well as “a significant number of mutations that were found only in those infected with the omicron strain,” was named “deltacron.”
Meanwhile, Kamil Khafizov, the head of the scientific group for the development of new diagnostic methods based on sequencing technologies at the Central Research Institute of Epidemiology of Rospotrebnadzor, also admits that there could be a laboratory error in identifying a hybrid of a delta and an omicron-strain.
In the meantime, the WHO special representative for the fight against COVID-19, David Nabarro, said that at least the next three months will be difficult due to the outbreak of the omicron strain, but its end is near.
