A new hybrid strain of coronavirus, deltacron, identified in Cyprus

Cypriot doctors have discovered a new strain of COVID-19 – a hybrid of strains “delta” and characterized by increased mobility “omicron”. A new variety of coronavirus, which has the same basis as that of the delta strain, as well as “a significant number of mutations that were found only in those infected with the omicron strain,” was named “deltacron.”

The head of the Laboratory of Biotechnology and Molecular Virology at the University of Cyprus Leontios Kostrikis admits. that the new strain can be identified in other laboratories around the world, and Health Minister Michalis Hadzipandelas hopes that the newly discovered hybrid strain does not create new health problems – both varieties of COVID-19 have already been identified in a country at the peak of a new wave of the pandemic.

Despite the anti-epidemic measures and the worldwide vaccination campaigns against COVID-19, the pandemic is in no hurry to give up, and new strains are being discovered one after another. Omicron alone, first identified in Botswana and South Africa, had been found in more than 110 countries by the end of December 2021.
