Two dead and three injured during a traffic accident in Urcuquí, Imbabura province

After 07:00 this Friday, a vehicle fell into a ravine.

In Urcuquí, Imbabura province, a traffic accident claimed the lives of two people; three others were injured and were transferred to health homes in Ibarra.

Santiago Recalde, commander of the local unit of the Fire Department, said that after 07:00 this Friday, a vehicle fell into a ravine.

Up to Palacara, in the Cahuasquí community, where the accident occurred, four vehicles arrived with paramedics and rescuers, in charge of evacuating the wounded and dead bodies, actions that lasted four and a half hours.

According to preliminary inquiries, a yellow truck lost track and was thrown into a 120-meter-high ravine. Five people were traveling in the car and, according to the report, two teenagers were found dead 40 meters from the road.

Further down, an injured elderly adult was found and inside the vehicle a couple between 45 and 50 years old who were trapped in the middle of the cabin were rescued. Once the three survivors were stabilized, they were transported in two ambulances to hospitals in the capital of Imbabura.

The prosecutor on duty of the Urcuquí canton proceeded to recover the deceased. The firefighters used ropes, metal material and stretchers.

The car was moving along the Buenos Aires – Urcuquí alternate artery, enabled before the closure of the Ibarra – San Lorenzo highway.

The relatives of the injured did not arrive in this province until after 1:30 p.m.

The wounded respond to the names of Andrea Martínez, 26; Gloria Cerón, 51 years old, and José Martínez; 67 years old; while the deceased are the teenagers JM and AM (I)
