Manabí closed 2021 with a rebound in the registration of death certificates, although the cause of the deaths registered in the Civil Registry is not specified.

The urban parish Andrés de Vera and Abdón Calderón, in the rural area, are the sectors where the greatest number of infections have been evidenced in recent days in the Portoviejo canton, according to the statistics managed by the zonal coordination 4 of the Ministry of Public Health ( MSP).

At the moment, in this province there have been 129 cases of the delta variant (of which a woman died last September), and at the moment there are four suspected cases of omicron that are expected to be confirmed or ruled out this week.

The increase in cases of COVID-19 infections in Manabí has ​​been further reflected in the last week, in which between 600 and 700 infections were registered, in relation to the last two weeks that preceded the last week of last year, when in those fifteen days 400 cases were reported, according to Santiago Pazmiño, zonal responsible (e) of epidemiological surveillance of the zonal coordination 4 of the MSP.

The occupancy level of ICU beds for COVID-19 patients is 90% occupancy and that of hospitalization reaches 50%.

Bosco Barberán, zonal coordinator 4 of the MSP, pointed out that to date Manabí reaches about 50,000 infections since the beginning of the pandemic, in March 2020, and that there is currently an increase in infections, these are mostly mild.

Of the deaths in the last week in Manabí, eight were reported due to this pandemic. “Despite the increase in cases, there has not been a sustained increase in deaths,” said Pazmiño.

The official added that depending on the levels of contagion, it will be taken into account to enable an area within the Portoviejo Specialty Hospital to care for users affected by the virus.

And the number of death certificates has also increased in Manabí in recent months, although the Civil Registry statistics do not include the cause of death of the people.

The increase in death certificates has been going since September when 500 were presented, the lowest figure in recent months; 51 were reported in October, 577 in November and last month closed with the registration of 625 deaths.

In total, in 2021 in Manabí 8,828 death certificates were registered in the Civil Registry, a figure lower than the 10,518 death certificates that were registered in this province in 2020, the year in which there was the highest registration of deaths in the country and that was generated in part by deaths from COVID-19.
