In Ecuador, the cases of the omicron variant of COVID-19, which is considered more contagious, are on the rise.
According to the Ministry of Public Health (MSP), until this Monday, January 3 there are 68 cases. The first contagion was detected on December 14.
Of the 68 cases, 33 are in Guayas, 30 in Pichincha, 2 in Tungurahua, 1 in Napo, 1 in Chimborazo, 1 in Cotopaxi,

In the Quito hospitals income also goes up.
Jorge Peñaherrera, manager of the Pablo Arturo Suárez Hospital of the MSP, said that since November a revenue increase so they increase beds to receive them.
In that health house there are 25 persons (78%) in intensive care unit (UCI), which has a maximum capacity of 32 beds.
In hospitalization COVID, 25 patients (75 %) and there are 33 beds available with a maximum capacity of 40 beds.
Peñaherrera added that they have a progressive opening plan with other hospitals. If Pablo Arturo Suárez, who is located in the north, were to have the 90% occupancy, automatically the Enrique Garcés hospital, in the south of Quito, opens beds and then the Calderón Teaching Hospital, in the far north.
“We hope it is the fourth week of January and the first or second (week) February there is another new peak. The idea is to have all the capacity of the hospitals to be able to offer (…), to maintain the growth curve ”, he said.
The Minister of Health, Ximena Garzón, in a television interview, argued that there is an outbreak of cases and his peak would go until mid-January when it would start to go down, but – he added – it depends on citizen behavior.
Juan Carlos Espín, a doctor and epidemiologist at the Ministry of Health, said that the cases in Quito have disappeared increasing taking into account that December is a month of many social activities.
For the next fifteen days, he added, a rebound in cases, but that are not serious or that hospitalization or intensive care is needed because this can collapse the health system.
Peñaherrera added that they serve the 50% of affiliated patients to the IESS so it is expected that this entity will add ICU beds and that health home will be able to care for the uninsured.
An average age of those admitted to the Pablo Arturo Suárez hospital is about 50 years old.

At lESS Quito Sur hospital, from the last six to eight weeks there has been a progressive increase in COVID cases.
According to their authorities, there was an average of 70 patients per day with respiratory symptoms while last week there were between 240 and 270. Of these, 5% require observation or hospitalization. 80% are vaccinated with complete schedules.
That nursing home already has the 50% of its facilities suitable for COVID care. There is 85% occupancy in hospitalization and 90% in ICU.
According to Minister Garzón, at the moment the people who are occupying the hospitals and die in the ICU are those who have incomplete vaccination schedules or no immunization.
