Ukraine will have to “steal” Russian gas from the transit pipe if Naftogaz is unable to ensure fuel imports to cover daily deficits. This, as reported by RBC with reference to the publication “Mirror of the week”, said the former head of the company Andrei Kobolev.
“The reaction of Russians to unauthorized selection (or, more simply, theft) of gas is not difficult to predict: stopping transit through the territory of Ukraine and the immediate termination of the current transit contract signed in December 2019,” he said.
Kobolev described a pessimistic scenario, according to which gas consumption within the country will reach the February 2020 level, and then “the withdrawal of Russian gas from the transit stream will become inevitable.”
Earlier, the head of Naftogaz, Yuriy Vitrenko, said that Ukraine cannot provide gas from sources alternative to Russia. He explained that physically vessels with LNG (liquefied natural gas) cannot enter Ukraine. According to him, even from a terminal in Poland, regasified LNG cannot physically enter Ukraine through pipes.
