Retired US politicians demand that the White House announce to the Russian Federation the “price” of the invasion of Ukraine

Russia must find out the cost of a hypothetical winter invasion of Ukraine, the date of which is being postponed from day to day. Former US ambassadors and officials insist on this, including ex-US ambassador to Russia Michael McFaul, in a statement published on the website of the Washington Atlantic Council. Most of the authors of the appeal to the Joe Biden administration, including former US State Department special envoy for Ukraine Kurt Volcker and former NATO commander in chief Philip Breedlove, are known to be extremely tough on Russia.

In their opinion, the White House should continue to interact with the EU and other partners to “ensure agreement on the elements of a response to any Russian attack on Ukraine, regardless of the degree or form of escalation.” In particular, Washington should consult with Berlin and reach an agreement that Germany will prevent the launch of Nord Stream 2 in the event of a Russian attack on Ukraine.

At the same time, the essence of the painful response for the Russian economy in the event of an “invasion” of Ukraine should be brought to the attention of the Russian authorities as soon as possible, and the armed forces of Ukraine should receive additional military equipment. At the same time, retired politicians, as well as the famous sociologist and philosopher Francis Fukuyama and other experts who signed the letter are confident that the United States and its allies should demonstrate a readiness for dialogue with the Russian Federation.

The topic of the hypothetical “invasion of Ukraine by Russia” has been discussed since November last year, when photographs of Russian military equipment allegedly concentrated in the regions bordering with Ukraine appeared in the world and Ukrainian media. At the same time, the leadership of the Russian Federation refutes these assumptions, and the politicians of Ukraine give the most contradictory “testimonies” on this score.
