Supporters of the imprisoned former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili have ended a mass hunger strike demanding his release. This was announced on Facebook by the chairman of the opposition United National Movement (UNM) party Nika Melia.
According to him, about 200 members and activists of the UNM completed the protest action at the request of the politician himself. Saakashvili said that if they do not stop the hunger strike, he will resume it himself.
“The resumption of the hunger strike by Mikheil Saakashvili would be fatal for him, so we accepted his request. At the same time, the struggle against the current regime in the country will continue … we decided to move on to the next stage of the struggle, which will be diverse and non-violent until justice and political justice prevail in the country, ”Melia explained.
Let us remind you that Saakashvili was detained on October 1 in Georgia, where he was convicted in absentia in the cases of the murder of banker Sandro Girgvliani and the beating of deputy Valery Gelashvili. The ex-head of state began a hunger strike almost immediately after his arrest, it lasted 50 days.
