Lukhovitsky City Court blocked the website of the human rights project “OVD-Info” (recognized in the Russian Federation as a foreign agent) for justifying the terrorist act in the FSB building in Arkhangelsk (October 31, 2018), as well as propaganda of the “Hizb ut-Tahrir al-Islami” group (banned in Russia ) and the Jehovah’s Witnesses organization (also banned in the Russian Federation). This was reported by the newspaper “Kommersant” with reference to the court’s decision published yesterday.
In “OVD-Info” called the justification of the trial nonsense and stressed that they are only dealing with the coverage of political events, and not justification of terrorism and extremism. At the same time, OVD-Info said that the court had violated many procedural rules. The human rights project will appeal the decision to block.
As a reminder, on December 25 it became known that Roskomnadzor blocked the website of the OVD-Info media project in Russia (entered by the Ministry of Justice into the register of unregistered public associations performing the functions of a foreign agent). “The sought resource is included in the register on the grounds provided for by Article 15.1 of Federal Law No. 149-FZ of July 27, 2006,” said the website of the Roskomnadzor unified register.
The decision to restrict access to the site page was made on December 20, 2021 by the Lukhovitsky District Court.
At the end of September, the Ministry of Justice included OVD-Info in the register of foreign agents. After that, the organization filed a lawsuit with the demand to cancel this decision, which was rejected.
Meanwhile, earlier Russian President Vladimir Putin recognized Russian legislation on foreign agents as “more liberal than in the United States,” and reminded that organizations recognized by foreign agents must “clearly and clearly declare sources of funding.” In turn, the press secretary of the head of state Dmitry Peskov admitted that the legislation on foreign agents could be changed.
“You can probably not immediately stick a label, but notify that you are showing signs of a foreign agent, and if you do not correct the situation within such and such a period and do not notify us, then you will be named a foreign agent. Probably, we need to more clearly define a scheme for exiting the status of a foreign agent, ”he noted.
