Deaths and violent events did not stop in the last hours of 2021 in Ecuador. In some localities, in addition to armed robberies, crimes such as hitmen were recorded.

Two of these cases occurred in Machala, El Oro province. There, with the murder of Jaime Eduardo Quimís Moreno, 24, and Patricio Jovany Armijos Montaño, the number of violent deaths increased to 143 at the end of 2021, from according to Police statistics. Thus, 2021 would be one of the most violent of the last decade.

The two subjects who were murdered on the night of December 30 in the Los Algarrobos neighborhood, north of Machala, would be related to a power struggle between criminal organizations, said Cristian Espinoza, head of Dinased of the National Police.

The incident occurred around 8:30 p.m., when a group of friends were talking and two men on a motorcycle appeared and opened fire.

Two more people were taken to a health home with gunshot wounds, both of whom are in recovery.

In Babahoyo, Los Ríos province, on the other hand, a woman lost her life after her ex-partner stabbed her, according to her relatives.

Ana Martillo Mota was the mortal victim. She died from three stab wounds that her ex-partner inflicted on her around 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 29. The femicide occurred in the San José sector, Babahoyo canton.

The woman’s relatives said that the suspect used a knife to attack her and that they tried to defend her, but it was impossible.

“Several months ago he had been threatening her with death, because she was reluctant to resume the relationship, she began to follow her and the harassment was getting worse,” said one of her sons.

In Esmeraldas, the robberies do not stop. Guests and presenters of the Punto Cero digital program were assaulted during a live broadcast on social networks.

In a video that went viral on the internet, it is seen how an armed man takes the cell phones and other belongings from the guests and presenters while they were in the middle of the program.

On the morning of this December 31, the Police, in their social networks, assured that they captured those involved in this assault in Esmeraldas. But it was not the only one.

In the last hours, Emerald citizens and businesses have also been victims of the underworld.

One of those affected was councilor Miguel Ruiz, who on his social networks said that he was a victim of insecurity, kidnapping and extortion, on December 28. That day his bicycle was stolen in the south of Esmeraldas. Hours later it could be recovered by the help of the population, he indicated.

In the municipal council session on Thursday 30, it was resolved to urge the Ministry of Government and the Government of Esmeraldas to resume joint operations between the National Police, the Armed Forces and the Municipal Transit Agency, to lower the levels of insecurity in the capital esmeraldeña.

For Marco Obando, a former security agent, this request helps somewhat to reduce these crimes, but there are specific issues to be resolved such as employment, education and the fight against drug trafficking, he indicates.

Governor Tania Obando hopes that the council will execute the current ordinance that allows only one person to mobilize after 7:00 p.m.

In Esmeraldas, assaults on premises and persons, committed by armed criminals, are reported daily.
