Eduard Babariko, the son of the former head of Belgazprombank and one of the candidates for the presidency of Belarus in the 2020 elections, has been charged with inciting hostility and organizing riots. According to the Telegram channel of Viktor Babariko’s headquarters, the status of Babariko Jr. in a previously presented criminal case related to alleged tax evasion remains unknown, the lawyers are under a nondisclosure agreement.
“We are still awaiting official comments from the Investigative Committee and the Prosecutor’s Office and demand an immediate end to politically motivated criminal prosecution,” said supporters of Viktor Babariko.
Earlier it was reported that new charges of a political nature threaten Eduard Babariko, who was detained on June 18, 2020 with his father, 20 years in prison.
Viktor Babariko himself was sentenced to 14 years in a maximum security colony and a fine for accepting a bribe on an especially large scale by an organized group and legalizing proceeds from crime. At the same time, the ex-banker did not admit his guilt. Both Eduard Babariko and his lawyers consider this accusation politically motivated and related to last year’s intention to run for president of the republic.
