The Russian national ice hockey team was credited with a technical defeat in the match of the youth World Cup due to coronavirus

The match between the national teams of Russia and Slovakia at the youth ice hockey world championship was canceled due to a case of coronavirus infection in the Russian team. This is reported by TASS with reference to a source.

According to the agency’s interlocutor, the Russian team was awarded a technical defeat in the match with a score of 0: 1.

RIA Novosti clarifies that the test for coronavirus of the striker of the Russian youth hockey team Matvey Michkov gave a positive result.

Now, as the Honorary President of the Council of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) Rene Fasel told TASS, the organization is holding a video conference on the further holding of the tournament.

It is noted that due to cases of coronavirus infection in the teams at the tournament, three meetings were canceled: USA – Switzerland, Czech Republic – Finland, Russia – Slovakia.

“I would not be surprised if, under the current conditions, a decision is made to cancel the tournament,” Fasel said.

Recall that the match Slovakia – Russia was to be held on December 30. Prior to this, the meetings between the USA – Switzerland and the Czech Republic – Finland were canceled. The teams of the USA and the Czech Republic were also awarded defeats.

In the first match at the youth world ice hockey championship, the Russians lost to the Swedes (3: 6), in the second they beat the Swiss (4: 2). In the final match of the group stage, the Russians on January 1 must play with the Americans.

The tournament, we recall, takes place in Edmonton and Red Deer and will end on the night of January 6. The current winner of the tournament is the USA national team.
