Borrell urged to involve the EU in the US-RF security talks

Only two parties cannot make decisions about security in Europe. It is necessary to take into account the interests of the European Union, said the head of European diplomacy Josep Borrell, commenting on the desire of Moscow and Washington to hold a meeting in January.

“We do not want and cannot afford to be outside spectators through whose heads decisions are made,” Borrell said, according to DW. He is confident that the European Union should take part in negotiations on de-escalation of tensions on the Russian-Ukrainian border and security issues. Such negotiations will only make sense if they are carried out in close coordination and with the participation of the EU, Borrell added.

Earlier, he called unacceptable the conditions put forward by Moscow along with its calls for security guarantees and non-expansion of NATO to the east. Borrell stressed that the right of any state to decide for itself whether or not to join any alliances cannot become a subject of discussion.
