From January 2022, Rosstat will change the calculation of weekly inflation. Such a measure is expected to help bring the accumulated weekly estimates closer to the actual monthly price increases. In addition, the procedure for recording prices for calculating the weekly assessment and the monthly consumer price index (CPI) will change.
According to a report on the website of the statistics department, the calculation of the weekly CPI estimate will be carried out according to the same algorithm as the monthly CPI – according to the Laspeyres formula.
As specified, changes will be made to the set of consumer goods and services. Thus, goods that are similar in consumer properties will be combined – for example, fatty and low-fat cottage cheese will be included in a single position “cottage cheese”, and Russian and foreign beer and cigarettes – simply in “beer” and “cigarettes”.
In addition, new services will be added to the index, such as travel on vacation to Egypt and the cost of a monthly subscription to a fitness center.
As explained in Rosstat, weekly registration of consumer prices will be carried out not on Monday, but on Friday. This will allow for prices to be taken into account in food markets that are not open on the first day of the week, as well as weekend fairs that open on Friday.
Meanwhile, the Central Bank of Russia expects the maximum effect from the key rate hikes in 2022. According to the head of the regulator Elvira Nabiullina, inflation by the end of 2022 will be 4.0-4.5%.
And on the eve, she said that in 2021 inflation in the country will be slightly more than 8%. Nabiullina pointed out that the increase in inflation was the result of the pandemic and the global trend.
