Alert in Cuenca due to the increase in COVID-19 cases in the Turi prison

SNAI confirms the presence of new positives among inmates, officials and administrative staff.

Inside the Turi Center for the Deprivation of Liberty (CPL), the alarms went off again, not because of insecurity issues, but because of an apparent increase in COVID-19 infections.

The National Service for Comprehensive Attention to Adults Deprived of Liberty and Adolescent Offenders (SNAI) confirmed the presence of new positives among inmates, officials and administrative personnel. During the morning, the need or not to suspend visits will be evaluated.

The Turi CPL welcomes more than 2,500 people deprived of liberty distributed in different pavilions. According to personnel consulted by this medium and who requested anonymity, in recent days “there are many people infected with the flu and cough, so since yesterday (Monday 27) they have begun to vaccinate.”

When consulting the issue to officials of the Zonal Coordination 6 of the Ministry of Public Health (MSP), it was stated that they are obtaining information to determine the extent of the infections, and that as of 10:00 they will confirm or distort the information that circulates on social media about a possible health emergency in Turi.

Meanwhile, the SNAI sent a statement in which it was reported that, in case of detecting positive cases after applying rapid tests, an epidemiological fence will be erected, accompanied by isolation.

To discuss the matter, the director of the CPL, Ulises Astudillo, was called by telephone, but he did not answer.

In a visit made last week to the CPL to learn about a Christmas project, it was found that in the external filter, in charge of the military, and in the first internal filter, led by the National Police, the basic measures of biosecurity: there was no temperature measurement or hand disinfection; and some uniformed men, especially in the lower part, next to the pavilions and workshops, do not wear masks.
