Alert of mutiny in Regional 8 jail forces visitors to evacuate

Government Minister Alexandra Vela visits the Litoral Penitentiary with authorities, police and military

A riot alert at the Regional 8 jail in Guayaquil forced visitors to evacuate this Tuesday morning.

During the visit, dozens of women were removed from pavilions 6 and 7 for “prevention.”

“They told us: they must leave at this moment and they began to close the doors on all sides but some women stayed inside. We can already see that they are coming out little by little ”, commented one of the women.

The Minister of Government Alexandra Vela visits the Litoral Penitentiary, in the northwest of Guayaquil, together with authorities, police and military, prior to the end of the state of emergency.

The state of exception was issued in September initially for 60 days, then it was considered to renew it for 30 more days. The decision was made after a massacre in its interior on September 28 due to the conflict between gangs to lead the prisons.

During the state of emergency, the massacre was repeated on November 12 and 13 at the Penitentiary. On this occasion, 65 inmates were killed, some shot, others dismembered and about 10 charred.

In the two massacres (September 28 and November 12-13), a total of 187 bodies arrived at the Crime Laboratory.

This morning an inspection is being carried out to check the spaces in the Penitentiary.

This tour is carried out by the General of the Police, Pablo Ramírez, director of the National Service of Comprehensive Attention to Adults Deprived of Liberty and Adolescent Offenders (SNAI); Governor Pablo Arosemena; Commander Tanya Varela, among other authorities. (I)
