The traditional Old Years Festival that takes place every December 31 in a section of the Amazon avenue, in the La Mariscal sector, in the north center of Quito, It will be resumed this year, but with modifications, as a preventive measure against the omicron variant of COVID-19.
The Municipality Security Secretariat reported that the event is coordinated with the La Mariscal Zonal Administration and It will consist of a tour of puppets on a mobile platform, from 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on December 31. “No stops will be registered to avoid crowds,” he said.
National COE reiterated that the burning of puppets at the end of the year can be done with a close family circle
The journey will start in Quinde square, also known as plaza Foch, which is located on Mariscal Foch and Reina Victoria streets. Then, you will continue along Amazonas Avenue and other roads in the area. The parade will end back in Quinde Square, explained the entity.
The Secretariat ruled on the resolution of the national Emergency Operations Committee (COE), adopted on December 21, which prohibits the burning puppets at public events.
“In this sense, the community is urged to avoid the concentration of people or use the public highway to burn and display puppets ”, requested the Cabildo.
The decision of the national COE allows the burning of puppets as long as it is done with the family circle and no crowds are generated.
The Old Years Festival was characterized by display large and eye-catching puppets on the sidewalks of Amazonas avenue, between Patria and Colón avenues. Vehicle traffic was suspended in several surrounding streets so that people can walk.
Due to the pandemic, in 2020 the usual program was not carried out. Instead, a virtual concert was held with local artists, organized by the La Mariscal Zonal Administration.
