Estonian President urged to “postpone” RF demands on security guarantees

Russia’s demands for security guarantees handed over to NATO should be postponed, said Estonian President Alar Karis in a New Year interview with Estonian Television.

According to him, “this is a long list of not wishes, but downright commands.” “If we start discussing them one by one, then a problem will arise,” Karis stressed, therefore “there can be no question of discussing these points”.

He added that “the only weapon against this is that Western countries, especially NATO countries are united in this regard,” and urged “not to be afraid of Russia, but to engage in containment.” According to Karis, the NATO countries “must keep pace with the allies and not allow themselves to be split, which, of course, is one of the goals of today’s Russia.”

“Nothing should happen without states, decisions on which are made,” Karis added.

At the same time, he called “frightening” the proposal of US President Joe Biden to hold a meeting of large NATO states with Russia, and noted that this “raised the question of how much we can trust our allies.” Nevertheless, Karis called this proposal “not malicious, but an ill-considered decision” and recalled that Biden, at a meeting with the heads of Eastern European states, promised that “there will be no decisions over their heads.”

We will remind, earlier the US Ambassador to Russia John Sullivan said that the US authorities are determined to “quickly resolve” the issue of the security guarantees proposed by Russia, but this requires coordination with NATO allies.
