People with a certified medical condition or contraindication are not required to be vaccinated against COVID-19 in Ecuador

Since this Thursday, in Ecuador, the vaccination certificate for entry began to be requested in some places.

Once the Government has declared this December 23 mandatory vaccination against COVID-19 in Ecuador, the health authority clarified within its guidelines that inoculation is not mandatory for people with any medical condition or contraindication.

The mandatory nature of vaccination against COVID-19 in the national territory is declared, according to the Ministry of Public Health (MSP), “due to the current epidemiological status, the risk of new variants, availability and access to vaccines, as well as the current scientific evidence ”.

In point 5 of the dictated guideline, it is specified that “a complete vaccination scheme is considered to be those who have two doses or a single dose, depending on the type of vaccine.” That is what must be stated in the card issued by the MSP or in the virtual certificate that can be obtained through its website.

But there is an exception that is recorded in point 7 of said normative document: “Vaccination will not be compulsory for people with any duly certified medical condition or contraindication.”

What does this mean? The MSP does not clarify this in the guidelines, but within its vaccination strategy, doctors have restricted it to those who have recently been infected by the virus. This is because, according to medical studies, whoever has overcome COVID has about six months of immunity provided by the previous infection. But if more than six months have passed, then it is convenient – and now mandatory – that you receive the vaccine.

Who are at risk from the COVID-19 vaccine?

The allergist Carlos Daniel Serrano says that there are patients with certain medical conditions that could have complications from the COVID vaccine: “People with severe uncontrolled asthma, individuals who have previously had anaphylaxis (severe allergic reaction) and very rare diseases, such as those called mastocytosis (infiltration of the skin or other organs and tissues, whose clinical manifestations are multiple and vary from one patient to another) ”.

If they decide to put it on, they should be closely watched for possible reactions, the doctor suggests.

People who did not have a history of these pathologies, but who had anaphylaxis after the first dose, the second dose is contraindicated in them, says Dr. Serrano.

In any case, to be exempt from this obligation, the person must have a medical certificate that supports it, indicating the type of condition.

Can allergy sufferers be vaccinated?

Most people, even allergy sufferers, can receive vaccines with a risk (of side effects) similar to that of the general population, says Dr. Serrano.

Post-vaccination caution and surveillance should only be exercised with those individuals who are allergic to a food, drug, or bee sting and who have experienced anaphylaxis, which are those reactions that start quickly after exposure to the trigger. that compromises the skin, the respiratory tract, the gastrointestinal tract or the cardiovascular system, bringing down the blood pressure.

The rest of the individuals, those with chronic urticaria, those with rhinitis, controlled asthma or a simple food allergy, do not have any higher risk than the general population. It is enough for the patient to be observed for 15 or 30 minutes in the same vaccination center; after that, it no longer requires intensive surveillance.

Ecuador is the first in the region to make vaccination against COVID-19 mandatory; Germany, Austria and Greece plan to do so in 2022

Since this Thursday, Ecuador began to request in some places the vaccination certificate for admission.

Between December 20 and 21, there was an increase of 467 infected in the country. In addition, there was an increase in the occupation of beds in the medical units. In intensive care units (ICU), the occupancy rate ranges between 24% and 77%. According to Vaccine meter, a tool that allows to follow the inoculation process, 84.84% of the vaccinable population, that is, the one over 5 years old, has received the first dose; and 77.23%, the second dose.
