Washington and Moscow are planning negotiations in January, they were announced by the representative of the American White House Jen Psaki.
At the same time, according to her, neither the date nor the place of this meeting has yet been determined.
The subject of discussion is the draft security guarantees in Europe proposed by Russia to the United States. However, as a spokeswoman for the White House said, America “is not ready to agree” with part of the proposed, but can support other initiatives from the project.
“The NATO proposals are a good example of something that the US would not agree to,” the official said.
Russian President Vladimir Putin at his big press conference today said that “we just directly raised the question that there should not be any NATO movement to the east” and that the Russian Federation now expects a response from the West.
So, according to him, at the beginning of 2022, a corresponding discussion with NATO representatives is expected in Geneva. «On the whole, we see a positive reaction so far, ”the president said.
At the same time, he stressed that the West “cheated, brazenly deceived” Russia when in the 1990s it promised not to push NATO eastward. Therefore, the Russian Federation demands from the Western countries “immediately” it owes security guarantees, Putin explained.
Meanwhile, the head of EU diplomacy, Josep Borrell, told Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba that the EU is “coordinating with partners” actions that may entail Russian proposals on security guarantees. A high-ranking representative of the US administration said that the country was discussing the Russian Federation and Ukraine with European states “in real time”.
“Any dialogue with Russia is accompanied by close consultations with the full participation of European partners and allies,” RIA Novosti quoted him as saying.
In addition, the American official said that the security talks will not be limited to Russian initiatives – it will also talk about Washington’s concerns about the way the Russian side is acting.
The agenda of the talks will include the “concern” of the United States and its allies “about the steps and actions of Russia that destabilize European security,” he summed up.
