“We will close the transit of goods”: Lukashenko expressed new threats to Europe after the scandal with “Belaruskali”

President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko has threatened to block the transit of Lithuanian and Ukrainian goods. So he reacted to the decision of Lithuania to terminate the contract for the transportation of potassium carbonate to the republic due to US sanctions.

“Mutual trade between Ukraine, for example, only with Lithuania through our country this year amounted to about three million tons … I do not understand what the Lithuanians think, pushing on us. We will close this transit, let them drive through Germany or try through Poland – it will be three times more expensive, ”BelTA quoted him as saying.

The politician also reminded that Ukraine and Lithuania depend on Belarusian transit due to the ban on supplies through the Klaipeda port.

A scandal erupted in Lithuania after December 8, despite the entry into force of the US sanctions against Belaruskali, the Lithuanian Railways company continued the transit of Belarusian products, as it received an advance payment. Thus, she acted “contrary to national interests.” Several senior officials have said they are ready to step down.

Belaruskali is one of the world’s largest producers of potash fertilizers. In August, the States added him to the “black list” due to disagreement with the results of the presidential elections in Belarus.

It is also reported that Minsk is thinking about building a second nuclear power plant in the country. According to the Telegram channel of the Ministry of Energy, Lukashenko instructed Prime Minister Roman Golovchenko to “work out the issue.”

The first power unit of the Belarusian NPP was launched in the fall of 2020 in the Grodno region. After that, Lukashenko called the republic a “nuclear power”
