They propose to create an occasional commission to oversee the Portovelo and Zaruma remediation plan established by Executive Decree in 2017
The five assembly members of the province of El Oro, asked the president of the National Assembly, Guadalupe Llori, to suspend the legislative recess and convene an extraordinary session of the plenary session to approve a draft resolution for priority attention to the emergency situation of the canton Zaruma.
The request was made five days ago and so far there is no response, said legislator Darwin Pereira (Pachakutik), who together with assembly members Carlos Falquez (PSC), Johanna Moreira (ID), María Fernanda Astudillo and Carlos Zambrano (UNES) , signed a document requesting the convening of an extraordinary session to approve the formation of an occasional commission that deals with the emergency situation that affects the population of Zaruma as a matter of priority in the face of the disaster resulting from illegal mining and the untimely intervention of the authorities responsible for control and its remediation.
On the night of December 15, in Zaruma, tunnels were registered in the colonial center of the city, causing serious damage and damage to the population of the canton.
Miduvi announced that it will carry out a housing plan for victims of the Zaruma sinkhole
According to legislators, these phenomena are not recent. In November 2016, in the same canton, the first sinkhole occurred on the property of the La Inmaculada Fe y Alegría Educational Unit, but so far there is no authority or body that has provided a solution to the problem.
On September 28, 2017, the former president Lenin Moreno, through Executive Decree 169, created the Remediation Committee, Recovery and Productive Development of the Zaruma-Portovelo Mining Area and the execution of a remediation plan, however there is no official information regarding the compliance with results, warn the representatives of El Oro.
Likewise, in the previous legislative period, an occasional commission was created to follow up on executive decrees 158 and 169, which are related to the remediation committee of the Zaruma and Portovelo mining area, and the ministerial agreements on the intervention of the Zaruma canton exclusion zone. The commission was never formed.
In the document sent to the head of the legislature, they describe the emergency situation that the Zarumeños are experiencing, so the need for immediate action by those who represent the province is imperative.
The legislator Darwin Pereira complained to Llori, due to the lack of answers, and anticipated that in the first week of January he will claim the leadership of the Assembly for not giving way to an emergency situation, since the conformation of the occasional commission will allow to oversee what made by the remediation committee and also follow up on the offers of the government authorities.
