The rise in the number of illegal migrants on the border of Belarus and Latvia is a sign that Riga has become the main target of the hybrid attack on Minsk. This was announced by the State Secretary of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Latvia Dimitri Trofimov in an interview with TV3, adding that the number of illegal immigrants trying to get to Latvia has been up to 80 people a day in recent days.
According to Trofimov, it is the rapid appearance of migrants at different points on the border that is a sign that someone from outside is coordinating their movement.
To contain the pressure of migrants, the government has decided to build an additional 22.8 km of temporary border fortifications in addition to the 37 km already existing, erecting in parallel the permanent border infrastructure.
As the head of the State Border Guard Guntis Pujats adds, it is Latvia that withstands the main pressure of migrants – the number of illegal immigrants who are trying to cross the border of Lithuania and Poland has significantly decreased. Since August 10 (the date of the introduction of the state of emergency in a number of regions of the republic), more than 3.3 thousand people were detained for illegal border crossing.
Illegal migrants from the Middle East, who are trying to penetrate into the EU through the border with Belarus, have become the reason for another aggravation of relations between Minsk and the European Union. The EU countries, especially Poland and the Baltic republics, believe that Lukashenka is coordinating the flow of migrants and avenging Europe for the sanctions, while Minsk rejects accusations of using unusual “hybrid weapons”.
