Eleven days after the end of the year, the positive cases of COVID-19 in Azuay, Cañar and Morona Santiago tripled, according to official figures. There are still no records of the omicron variant, but it is not ruled out that sooner or later it will appear. Meanwhile, they insist on avoiding mass encounters to say goodbye to 2021, get vaccinated and comply with basic biosafety measures.

Until the beginning of December, in the Ministry of Public Health (MSP) it was noted that the new infections of coronavirus increased and, according to the zonal coordinator 6, Andrea Bersosa, “there is concern that a new increase in cases may occur and that they may be serious”.

The official revealed that in Zone 6, weekly cases rose from 45 to 150 in December, a figure that although “is not to cause chaos or panic” in the population, it is an alert.

Most of those infected are in home isolation and in a smaller number, which he did not specify, in hospitalization and in Intensive Care Units (ICU).

As for the vaccination of the first and second doses, Azuay has so far reached 70%. The main groups pending immunization are children and adolescents five years of age and older.

Regarding the occupation of public and private beds to care for serious patients with COVID-19, Bersosa assured that there is coordination to generate spaces and thus prevent the system from collapsing.

For example, at the Vicente Corral Moscoso hospital, its manager, María José Vásquez, said that they have a contingency plan ready to enable the fourth floor with a maximum of 45 beds.

And just to avoid more contagions and agglomerations that could put health at risk, the Police Mayor, Andrés Vicuña, explained that from this Monday 20 to January 3, 2022 control operations will be carried out to determine if the capacity in bars, nightclubs, hotels or convention centers is allowed.

If anomalies are found, “they will talk with the administrators, the organizers, so that the event is suspended in a preventive manner,” the mayor warned.

For the control of security, an operation was articulated in which 5,613 public officials (police, military, commissioners, among others) and 776 vehicles will participate, it was indicated. (I)
