A mix of flavors, smells, cultures and music make Tapapiés the most popular tapas route in Madrid. The Lavapiés Merchants Association is already organizing preparations for its 11th edition, which will be held from November 18 to 28. Due to the restrictions of the pandemic, last year’s route was moved from the end of October, the usual date of celebration, to a month later and in 2021 it remains in November.
The organization is pending to unveil the official poster and the list of bars and restaurants that will participate in the event. Every year more than 100 establishments take part in this festival that shows off the multiculturalism of the Madrid neighborhood. In all of them you can acquire A tapa and a drink for a recommended price of 2.5 euros. In the case of only wanting to try the lid, it would stay at 1.50 euros.
How is this route different from the tapa from others?
The Lavapiés tapa festival is eagerly awaited each fall in the capital of Spain because it mixes creations of nationalities from all over the world. In previous editions, passersby could eat the traditional ham croquettes or tiger mussels and, a few meters away, a vegan ‘crunchicachopo’, or a ‘cheese tikka with tamarind sauce’ or a sweetbread gyoza.
In addition to the variety of recipes, the streets are lively with musical shows, storytelling and theatrical performances with a focus on multiculturalism. Other editions of Balkan music, children’s wink theaters and brass bands have toured the streets where the participating establishments are located.
Tapapiés 2020
Last edition the route had to be reinvented to adapt to the restrictions of the pandemic. The traditional tapas contest in which the best creations are chosen was done virtually. In addition, although you could go to the establishments, the capacity was limited and you had to reserve, avoiding the traditional mechanics of going from one bar to another.
In Tapapiés 2020, although the atmosphere and music in the streets were missed, the festival was solved with recipes, cooking tips and a virtual vote. Those recognized as best tapas They were the gyoza of gizzards from the restaurant The pazo of Lugo, which won the Estrella Damm award for the best cover of the year’s contest. For its part, the restaurant Cat Cat presented the Sandwich Club of Segovia New York, with which he won the jury award, while the audience award went to Tatema, which created an Iberian lamb and sweet potato stew.
