The governor of Transbaikalia warned that covid could lead to a decrease in the population of the region

The population of the Trans-Baikal Territory due to covid may become less than 1 million people. The governor of Transbaikalia, Alexander Osipov, warned about this in a message to the regional ZakSu, reports RIA Novosti.

Osipov noted that there are regions in the Russian Federation that are poorer than Transbaikalia. “But where is less than ours, murders, suicides, drunkenness, stabbing, violent crimes, drug addiction and so on,” he added. According to Osipov, relatively recently there were 1.37 million people in Transbaikalia, and now there are just over a million people. “In a bad sense, thanks to the contribution of the coronavirus, there is a risk of going down to less than a million,” Osipov stressed, calling the situation “a very dangerous challenge.” At the same time, they admitted that there are positive trends in decreasing population decline, especially migration outflow, but one cannot relax.

Osipov clarified that not only cardiovascular diseases, oncology, diabetes mellitus and covid are to blame for the increased mortality compared to the average Russian level and the level of the Far Eastern Federal District, but primarily external causes: drug addiction, violent crimes, murders, social vices.

“And these issues are not solved by money,” admitted Osipov. And he concluded: the region needs the development of the economy, social sphere, infrastructure. “All this is being done … But this does not lead to the main thing – to a change in our values, our attitude towards life, towards ourselves, towards families and children,” added Osipov.
