Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin is convinced that a possible aggravation in relations between Moscow and Kiev will lead to the introduction of much tougher anti-Russian sanctions by the US and the EU. She stated this in an interview with Yle Radio Suomi.
According to Marin, now the collective West “needs to be prepared for various scenarios of the development of events” around Ukraine. “Europe cannot agree with Russia’s ideas about its spheres of influence,” she stressed. And she added: “We need to make it clear that if Russia continues to act aggressively towards Ukraine, it will have consequences.”
Marin also pointed out that Washington had previously declared its intention not to communicate in Russia alone, but only together with partners, and Brussels holds the same opinion.
“Russia has a great responsibility to ensure that the situation does not get worse,” said Marin.
As for Finland’s accession to NATO, according to Marin, Helsinki is independently responsible for its own policy, and there are “possibilities of choice”, including joining NATO. “Now we are not discussing this option, but there is an option for the future,” she concluded.
