A conference with Russia on the spheres of influence of the powers would be a step backward for NATO, said the secretary general of the alliance Jens Stoltenberg.
“The idea of holding a new conference, where we would again discuss the zones of influence, within which the great powers could control what their neighbors can or cannot do, would be a step back for us, and this is a completely wrong direction,” he said. he is in an interview with the Journal de Dimanche.
In his opinion, instead of talking about NATO’s spheres of influence, Moscow should discuss ways to build confidence, control arms, reduce tensions and ensure transparency of the exercises.
Earlier, a NATO spokesman said that the North Atlantic Alliance is ready for constructive negotiations with Russia in the near future. According to him, all member countries of the organization have studied the proposals submitted by the Russian side on security guarantees.
On December 17, the Russian Foreign Ministry announced draft agreements with NATO on security guarantees. In particular, they contain calls not to regard Moscow as an enemy and to abandon the further expansion of NATO to the East. Russia also suggested that the North Atlantic Alliance abandon plans for Ukraine and not include Kiev in the organization.
