Assistant to the President of Russia Vladimir Medinsky wants to copy articles from Wikipedia into the Russian analogue “Knowledge.Wiki” under the auspices of the Russian Military Historical Society (RVIO). This was reported by TASS with reference to the speech of the chairman of the Russian Military Historical Society during a meeting of the organization’s supervisory board. In this case, a domestic online encyclopedia can completely replace the original.
According to Medinsky, about 99.9% of articles on the original Wikipedia are neutral or positive. However, according to the presidential aide, Russia needs its own analogue of such a portal, since after all, 0.1% of materials are “enemy slander” in which there is “not a word of truth.” In addition, the head of RVIO recalled that the Russian Knowledge.Wiki has only 22 thousand articles, so it is necessary to more actively develop local content. At the same time, the Russian-language Wikipedia contains about 70 million materials.
Let us recall that after the start of the special military operation (SVO) in Ukraine, there were repeated calls in Russia to block Wikipedia. At the end of 2023, the Wikimedia RU project, which supported the Russian-language part of the encyclopedia, was closed. On February 2, 2024, the Ministry of Justice included Stanislav Kozlovsky, executive director of Wikimedia RU (introduced Ministry of Justice of the Russian Federation to the list of foreign agents) to the register of foreign agents.
