The craving for salty food can be due to several reasons, reports Pravda.Ru with reference to gastroenterologist Ekaterina Kashukh.
According to the specialist, one of the reasons why you want something “salty” is associated with hormonal changes in the body. However, in addition to the well-known taste preference of pregnant women, cravings for salty foods are also possible during premenstrual syndrome, as well as stress.
“When a person sleeps little, overloads himself or experiences strong emotions, the level of the hormone cortisol, which is responsible for the reaction to stress, increases in his blood. This provokes a feeling of hunger. Some people eat sweets and some eat salty stress,” Kashukh explained.
In addition, such a change in taste preferences can be a manifestation of a number of diseases. One of them is Addison’s disease: a slowly developing hypofunction of the adrenal cortex, which cannot produce the required amount of hormones. This is where the craving for salty foods comes from. Other symptoms include loss of weight and appetite, fatigue, dark spots on the skin and mouth ulcers.
Another cause may be Bartter’s syndrome, a genetically determined pathology in which important minerals (including sodium) are washed out of the body. Characteristic symptoms also include low blood pressure, muscle spasms and frequent urge to go to the toilet.
