Charge d’Affaires of the Russian Federation in Latvia Oleg Zykov was summoned to the Latvian Foreign Ministry. TASS reports this with reference to the diplomatic department.

It is noted that the Latvian Foreign Ministry demanded an explanation from Russia in connection with putting its politicians on the wanted list, noting that “politically motivated charges” had been brought against Latvian citizens.

The Latvian Foreign Ministry added that it maintains contacts with law enforcement agencies to reduce potential risks, and communication with partners from the European Union on this issue.

The Lithuanian authorities also expressed protest to Moscow. The Charge d’Affaires of the Russian Federation was also summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and presented with a diplomatic note expressing a “strong protest,” the diplomatic department clarified. They noted that the decisions of the Russian Federation contradict generally accepted norms of international law, demonstrate efforts to falsify the past and disrespect for the historical memory of Lithuania. The diplomatic department demanded an end to the politically motivated persecution of Lithuanian citizens.

Let us recall that earlier the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs put on the wanted list the Prime Minister of Estonia Kaja Kallas, the Secretary of State of this country Taimar Peterkop, the Minister of Culture of Lithuania Simonas Kairys, as well as deputies of the Seimas of Latvia. They appear in the case of the destruction and damage of monuments to Soviet soldiers.
