The main drag on the St. Petersburg economy was the labor shortage. This is stated in the report on the socio-economic situation of St. Petersburg in 2023, which was presented by Petrostat.
According to the document, the city’s economy survived last year better than several previous ones, but the data in the “Labor Market” section is frightening. It is noted that the need of enterprises for workers, declared to the employment services, increased fourfold – from 15.1 thousand people in January to 60.1 thousand in November. At the same time, the number of unemployed St. Petersburg residents dropped to an absolute minimum by December – 13.8 thousand people. At the beginning of last year, this figure was 17.1 thousand. There were more than three times fewer applicants than vacancies, the report indicates.
It presents data only on materials from state employment services.
As “DP” writes with reference to the chairman of the Committee on Labor and Employment of the Population of St. Petersburg, Dmitry Cherneiko, the need for qualified workers has recently increased due to the development of production and the constant emergence of new jobs. “The issue can no longer be resolved only through migration. Its potential is almost exhausted,” Cherneiko is sure. According to him, about 1 million residents of other regions of Russia and foreigners work in the city.”
At the same time, the number of people employed in the city’s economy is also growing. Thus, in 2023 it exceeded the 2019 figure by 177 thousand people, added the head of the labor committee.
The most popular professions in the Northern capital are industrial engineer, cook, tractor driver, electric and gas welder, bricklayer, mechanic, technologist, and information security engineer.
