The judge who arrested the former head of the Serpukhov district Shestun and the defendants in the Baring Vostok case dies

Retired judge of the Basmanny Court of Moscow, Yulia Safina, died last Thursday after suffering a coronavirus.

As RIA Novosti was told in court, Safina was sick with coronavirus, and in addition, she had many concomitant diseases.

Yulia Safina, in particular, issued orders on the arrest or extension of arrest to the former governors of the Kirov region Leonid Markelov and Nikita Belykh, the ex-head of the Serpukhov region Alexander Shestun, the defendants in the Baring Vostok case, the Deputy Prime Minister of Crimea Vitaly Nakhlupin, the ex-head of the Republic of Mari El Leonid Markelov, former Senator Rauf Arashukov and his father Raul, the policeman who planted drugs on journalist Ivan Golunov, American investor Michael Calvey and others. She also released the Khachaturian sisters, who were accused of killing their father, from the pre-trial detention center.

As Kommersant recalls, her colleagues first stripped her of her status for numerous violations.

The reason for the deprivation of the status was the case of the businessman Ilya Sherman. Finding Sherman guilty, Judge Safina sentenced him to seven years of general regime. However, the Moscow City Court, considering the complaints against the verdict, considered her decision, which was based on the accusation with all its mistakes, distorting “the very essence of justice.” The businessman’s case was sent for new consideration to the same court.

At the request of the judge, who indicated that she had not previously had any penalties, she was reinstated in her position, but recently she only considered cases of administrative violations.
